(2) "Find" can be executed by simply pressing the "Return Key." (3) There are now two window sizes to choose from. The compact window is ideal as a web companion. It can, however, readily be switched to a larger window where more serious database management can be conducted. The windows "snap" back to their respective window-sizes, which are pre-designated and yet adjustable. (B) What "Bookmarksman" does: Bookmarksman, a URL management database solution, helps keep track of web browser bookmarks that tend to have the nasty habit of haphazardly accumulating into something unmanageably humongous. (1) Bookmarks can be coherently organized and utilized as a valuable source of information. (2) The powerful Search feature makes it possible to retrieve relevant bookmarks that are otherwise easily misplaced. (3) Search results are displayed in list view. (4) Duplicate URLs are easily extracted and deleted at a stroke. (5) Bookmarks can be sorted in number of ways. (6) Drag/Drop-aware. (7) You can attach notes to bookmarks, which will later be put to use as keywords in the search mode. (8) E-mail addresses as well as URLs can be stored. (9) One click opens a web page or an e-mail sheet. (10) The last-visited time/date for each bookmark is remembered and the bookmarks can be viewed as history. (11) You can "flag" your favorite bookmarks. Tex-Edit Plus is a scriptable, styled text editor that fills the gap between Apple's bare-bones SimpleText and a full-featured word processor. It's fast, efficient, and has a clean, uncluttered interface. It's also great for cleaning up text which is transmitted over the Internet. Tex-Edit Plus features: Extensive munging abilities, unlimited file size, Drag&Drop support, AppleScript support, Word Services support, Speech Manager support, picture handling, sound handling, movie handling, ability to create SimpleText Read-Only documents, and much more. Tex-Edit Plus can read and write UTF-16 (unicode) text. The new file format is fully backward compatible with previous versions. Tex-Edit Plus supports unlimited undo and redo. Each paragraph can be formatted individually. These new paragraph settings include text justification (left, center, right, full), space above, space below, left indent, right indent, first line indent (or hanging outdent), and bottom border (in one of several line styles). Each paragraph can also have its own line spacing (in one point increments) and dominant text direction (useful for right-to-left scripts). Version 4.3.0b3 * Added "Clear Menu" command to clear the "Open Recent" submenu. * Added scriptable switch in the prefs dialog to toggle Quartz anti-aliasing. * Read and write RTF documents. * OS X Services enabled (in the Tex-Edit Plus menu). * Quartz anti-aliased text enabled (requires OS 10.1.5 or greater). * New character styles added (All Caps, All Lowercase, Hidden). * Click at the left margin to select a line, double click the left margin to select a paragraph. * Improved tab efficiency. The "Real Tabs" menu item has been eliminated, since tabs are always enabled. * Various minor internal performance enhancements and bug fixes. * Downgrade alert--> The "Show Invisibles" command will show "hidden" text, but it no longer shows non-printing characters (CR, FF, Tab, space). This hopefully will be corrected in a future version of the text engine. * Fixed script bug involving the "close window saving yes" command. * Fixed bug noted after editing iDisk files. (Tex-Edit would ask to mount iDisk at incorrect times.) Since I can print to a postscript >file without having any printer connected, why should I not >be allowed this after switching temporarily to a >non-postscript printer? A couple of options: 1. Set up a Desktop printer for your PostScript printer; when you want to switch back to this printer from the non-PS printer, click on the Desktop printer and choose "Set Default Printer" from the "Printing" menu in the Finder. Don't use the Chooser. Attempts to print to this printer will fail, but you'll still be able to print to a PS file. 2. Use Desktop Printer Utility to create a Desktop Printer which is specifically set up to print to a PostScript file rather than to a printer. You'll create a "Translator (PostScript)" printer type in the DTPU. Set it as your active printer using the method described above. This type of virtual printer won't require you to remember to select "print to file" in the print dialog. It'll behave just like a normal printer, except that everything you send to it will end up as a PostScript file somewhere. No network connection required. You have to play your old vinyl records into your Mac and digitize them there. If you've ever set up a tape recorder to record from the Sound Out ports on your amp (or dedicated TAPE RECORD ports) to tape deck's Sound In, just change this: Turntable-->preamp-->amplifier-->tape deck to this: Turntable--->preamp-->amplifier-->Mac (if you don't need a preamp to play records through the regular speakers you don't need a preamp for this either) This assumes that your Mac has 16 bit stereo Sound In. Some of the newer Macs don't. If yours is one of those, you need a USB audio doohickey that takes the place of the old built-in Sound In jacks: Turntable-->preamp-->amplifier-->USB SoundIn-->Mac You may also need plug adapters. Most stereo equipment uses RCA jacks and one cable per channel (left & right wires). Most Macs with Sound In built in will have a single stereo headphone-style jack. You'll need a Y adapter with headphone jack at the botto and dual RCAs at the top. Then you need sound software that records sound for durations sufficient to do the longest tracks you anticipate recording. There is a lot of almost-adequate shareware in the snd directory at Info-Mac, and lots of commercial apps that are way beyond adequate. I use an extinct program called SoundEdit 16, so I can't advise you on which package to use unless you also have an old copy of SoundEdit 16 layout about. But the process should be similar regardless of package: Using the Sound (or Monitors & Sound) Control Panel, or the Sound Prefs Pane (OS X), designate your Sound In (built-in or USB) as the source to use as designated Sound In. Launch the program. Set up your album on the turntable. Start the program's recording (most likely it will mimic the appearance of a tape deck's controls with an obvious "Record" button). Cue the needle down to start playing. Adjust recording levels in the program if necessary (this may require restarting the track and starting the recording over if you change levels). You can either record one track at a time (trimming it in the program and saving it as a digital audio file) or save one album side at a time (then using editing controls to chop up the resultant huge audio file into individual smaller track files). In SoundEdit 16, which is old, I don't have the option of saving as MP3 so I save as AIFF and then convert the files to MP3 using a separate MP3 encoder application. More modern sound software will probably let you save directly to MP3. hth -- Allan Hunter ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 07:45:22 -0400 From: Scott Horton To: Subject: Vinyl >Is there a method of transferring vinyl recordings to Hard disk.? I believe that it has some filters, etc. to reduce hiss and pops, etc. Good luck, SH ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jul 2002 00:30:08 -0400 From: Kimball Kramer To: digest@info-mac.org Subject: VIRTUAL CD A friend who is a PC user showed me a program called "Virtual CD". It enables one to store the full contents of a CD-ROM disk (or several disks) as virtual disks on the computer system hard drive. This way the CD-ROM contents can be accessed quickly and without inserting anything into the drive. Is there a program for the Mac which will do this? I realize that there is some say to do this for floppy disks, but I don't know what will work for a CD-ROM.
