Yep /tfpboot exists and as far as errors go
On the Cisco side:
I attempt to copy the start up config of my cisco router to the tftp server:
copy tftp start
I get:
%Error opening tftp://10.50.0.58/startup-config (tftp server ip)
Not a whole lot of info there
On my linux box I look in /var/log/messages and see the following:
localhost tftpd[9681]: tftpd: trying to get file: startup-config
localhost tftpd[9681]: tftpd: servingfile from /tftpboot

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
