Given the positions in the complex plane of the open loop poles and zeros of a system, ROOTLOCS plots the loci of the system's closed loop poles as the gain of the system is increased indefinitely starting from zero. ROOTLOCS can handle systems with up to 20 poles and 20 zeros, and is very fast. It offers a choice of working in either the S-Plane or the Z-Plane and it can plot the loci of both positive and negative gain systems. Several useful 'tools' are included for getting quantitative information from the displayed root locus plots. The current version of the program (3.7) incorporates several major improvements over the previously archived version (3.5), including : ¥ Magnification of a rectangular region of the plane ¥ Faster scrolling of the plane with Shift + Cursor keys ¥ Automatic adjustment of Z-Plane size for best display of damping lines ¥ Original boundary values also restored with Restore Original PZ ¥ Unit circle permanently displayed in Z-Plane ¥ Input edit fields now accept only numeric data ¥ A host of bugfixes and other minor improvements The program should prove useful to students of control engineering and practising engineers alike. ROOTLOCS requires a PowerMacintosh equipped with System 7.0 (or higher). The point-and-click interface makes it easy to test your CGI script syntax right through your browser. No more wading through server error logs or command line debugging. Tested on Perl scripts for Linux/Unix servers though it may work in other environments. This script utility is completely freeware. Wright" Subject: Appearance Extension and Desktop Pictures? SaintJohn, I have the Appearance SDK NDIF disk image from OS8.0 if you want to bundle parts of it with your program (in a pre-8.0 users' version, advisably). You can also try -- though from where I sit it's a notoriously slow download -- emulation.net: they have a set in a Stuffit file called "appearance.sit" for Mac users who d/l game emulators for use with OSes older than 8.x. As for the Appearance SDK image: I found the one I have via FTP, and I think it was info.apple.com under Apple Support Area/Apple Software Updates or the developer section (which i remember also being mirrored on the Web as developer.apple.com). You can try there with an FTP client (I'm of the opinion the two major web browsers had FTP implemented as a begrudged afterthought, their clients are so poor at it) like Anarchie or Fetch and see what you get, or you can email me and ask for mine. I keep it in the same folder as my install of DiskCopy 6.1.3, more or less as a test-case image. Hope this helps Steve Wright In Info-Mac Digest XVII.33, you wrote: >An application I'm working on will require either the Desktop Pictures >control panel or the Appearance control panel as well as the Appearance >Manager. However my personal experience with Java on the Mac is poor, a lot of W3 Java does not work. Indeed here in the UK I was most disappointed to find that I could not view stock graphs c/o Reuters Reuters from the Mac, Reuters were even good enough to look into the matter but could not find a solution. Despite trying various MacOS, Java and browser combinations I have managed to get little joy. But I put this down to my lack of know-how, or bad luck. I was alarmed today to hear a computer pundit speaking on the prime TV financial show the BBC's Working Lunch who pronounced that Macs were inappropriate to use for personal Internet Banking as their Java was inadequate and did not allow access to most banking on-line service. With such a damning and unchallenged judgement on the Apple Mac as a whole, I am sure sales in the UK will be restrained, whatever colour the box, until Mac Java is thoroughly sorted out - and seen and understood to be so. I am so disappointed to discover that any WinTel machine can outshine my Mac at such a fundamental and crucial task.
